“Love & Other Drugs” Fails the Timex Test

Jake Gyllenhaal chats up Anne Hathaway.

Here’s all you need to know about what I thought of “Love & Other Drugs,” which the Mister and I saw at the (thank goodness!) $5 matinee yesterday: I checked my watch three times. I couldn’t wait for it to be over.

And that was even after it got better near the end!

I had read negative reviews about the film, which features Anne Hathaway as a free spirit with early-onset Parkinson’s disease and Jake Gyllenhaal as a very-charming pharmaceutical salesman-ladies man, and I had reservations about seeing it. But the Mister was intrigued, so I figured it was his turn to (finally) get his way.

Might be his last movie-choice victory for awhile.

Gyllenhaal and Oliver Platt celebrate getting the Viagra account.

I thought that Peter Travers of “Rolling Stone” summed up the movie nicely: “If you think Hathaway and Gyllenhaal are worth watching in anything, try Love and Other Drugs. It puts that theory to the test.”

Hathaway and Gyllenhaal are both very talented and good-looking. But the plot seemed too schizophrenic for my tastes. The movie couldn’t decide if it was a romantic comedy or a drama; too much of it was hit or miss and finally fell flat. Which had me checking the ol’ Timex.

“Love & Other Drugs” most definitely earned its R rating. This isn’t a flick for the younger set. As for the more-mature (ahem!) crowd, it might be best to wait for the DVD.
